Maintaining Your Exercise Bike

Cleaning Your Home Exercise Bike
Always wipe your exercise bike down after each use, particularly if you perspire heavily. Sweat left on a machine can result in rusting of framework and ultimately compromises frame strength. It can also seep into internal areas of the exercise bike (particularly computers) resulting in problems with the computer display and functioning.
It is recommended that you periodically wipe down the bike with a mild detergent solution or spray cleaner ensuring that droplets don't enter the computer casing or internal areas such as pedal mechanics. Rinse clean using a clean, damp cloth. Seats can be cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaner or specific upholstery cleaner such as Armour All.
Lubricating Your Exercise Bike
Always check that the pedals and crank have been tightened correctly and do not start to unwind. If they appear loose, remove with an appropriate spanner, grease the thread and replace. Always use caution when fitting pedals. Do not force the pedals on if it appears they will not screw into on a monthly basis, lubricate the crank and seat post with dry silicone spray. For spinner cycles, silicone spray can also be applied to the outside of the exposed metal flywheel which is in contact with the brake pads. This prevents drying out which can result in inconsistant motion and squeaking. Silicone spray is available at all Aussie Fitness Equipment stores.
General Tips
It is recommended that all users check their bike regularly. Ensure all bolts are tightened and that cables show no signs of fatigue. It is essential that your bike remains in an enclosed environment, free from exposure to the elements. If your bike is left unused for any length of time, be sure to remove batteries from the casing to prevent damage. Similarly, bikes using external power (such as power points) should be unplugged when not in use to avoid power surges. Surge protectors are recommended with all of these styles of bikes to protect the computer and electrical components from fluctuations in mains power supply. These can be purchased from any electronic outlet store.
When seating yourself on an exercise bike, it is essential that you sit on the seat first before placing your feet on the pedals. By standing on the pedals, pressure is placed on the crank arms and bearings within the crank, which can result in premature deterioration of these areas.
It is advisable that every 12 months your fitness equipment is serviced by an Aussie Fitness Service Technician.
